Photo of Joseph Pilates "If you are 30 years old and your spine is tight, you are old. But if you are 60 years old and your spine is flexible, you are young." - Joseph Pilates

It is true that the key to staying active into your senior years and maintaining a sense of youthfulness throughout your life is highly dependent on the health and mobility of your spine and all of the muscles that support it.

Types of Classes

Essential Mat: This class is formatted to teach the new student all of the Pilates basic positions and movements. The pace is just a little slower than other mat classes to allow for time to connect body and mind and improve your quality of movement. A perfect place to begin your Pilates journey.

Essential / Intermediate Mat: Once familiar with the Pilates basics, our goal is to challenge your mind/body integration with faster paced, more complicated movement. A variety of props are used in this class all, intended to help you better connect with your core. Modifications are offered as needed to make the exercises better suited to each individual.

Group Reformer: A complete body strengthening and flexibility routine which is choreographed to flow from one exercise to the next. The reformer workout compliments the intense abdominal and back work of the mat repertoire by adding upper and lower body strengthening while still challenging core stability. A 15 to 20 minute warm-up and mat exercises may be included as part of this class.

Group Reformer Plus: Ten minutes of cardiovascular exercise using the jump board at the beginning and end of the reformer workout. Group Reformer Plus is a complete and efficient fitness routine addressing the three components of physical fitness: cardiovascular exercise, full body strengthening and flexibility.

Pilates was brought to America in the 1920s by German born health enthusiast Joseph Pilates. Once thought to be a workout for only the elite, dancers and celebrities, Pilates is now the fastest growing fitness method in the world.

Pilates consists of a series of strengthening and flexibility exercises done on a mat or specialized equipment using springs and/or body weight for resistance. The focus is on the core of the body, the abdominals, back and hip muscles. The versatility of the method accommodates and challenges the abilities of everyone from novice exerciser to the most conditioned athletes.
